My Missions - Italy

MISSIONS 2 and 3

Our target was Bleckhammer, Germany. We carried (10) ten 500 lb. bombs for an attack on an oil refinery there.

On the bomb run we encountered heavy, intense, and accurate flack both tracking and barrage. The copilot got two flack holes in his windshield. Glass was dashed in his face but his oxygen mask protected him. There were holes between the engines on the wing. One piece of flack made a hole in the fuselage between two oxygen bottles above my ball turret. The tail also had a hole about three inches wide and seven inches long ripped in it by a big piece of glancing flack.

We dropped our bombs but the target was obscured by smoke so we did not see the results.

This mission was flown on Friday the thirteenth with thirteen ships in formation.
