My Missions - Italy

OCTOBER, 1944 - MISSION 1

I took the right waist position on Lt. Parvin's crew. The weather was fairly bad for bombing. We flew up the Adriatic to bomb northern Italy. Just as we crossed the coast heading out over the sea we sighted a submarine which crash dived at the sight of us. I don't know whether it was an allied or German sub.

Flying over enemy occupied Italy was a new experience. The weather was quite bad with the result that we caught only occasional glimpses of the ground. Our target was a bridge. It was completely obscured by the clouds below us. We went right over it but did not drop our bombs because of the visibility.

I saw flack bursting below and among a group of B-17's off our right wing.
