I am planning on converting my community tank into a Tanganyikan cichlid set up. I would like to do some shelldwellers, like lamprologus, along with the rocks and cave dwellers, like the Julis, and maybe an enantiopus.
I currently have 30 lbs of Aragamax Select for the substrate. My tank is 55 gallons, so I know I need more. Do you notice any difference with the fish using the Select over the Aragamax Sand? Is there a "bed depth" I should be aiming for? How much more should I purchase?
I'm going to run two filters. One is the Penquin Biowheel 330 I already have. I also plan on purchasing a Rena Filstar XP3 canister. What do you think of the Renas? I know the Eheims are the top choice, but I don't want to spend the 200+ for one.
Finally, what kind of rocks should I use to make it appear more natural? I have spent a lot of time looking for a good natural display but haven't found many.
Let me know if you need more of that plant I dropped off on Sunday. I'm thinking about pulling out my main plant and planting one of its clippings because the roots coming out of the main plant are getting really unattractive.
