Hi Ned, I was in last night and purchased the pair of Blue Crays and I was having a hard time remembering exactly what they were. Between my girlfriend and I we think you might have said Malacostraca. Is this correct??

They made the trip back home without problem and seem to be doing just fine in their new home. They were given about 5 shrimp pellets about an hour after introduced into their new home and gobbled them up quickly. For the time being I'm tryin to obtain their scientific name so I can be better able to gather any info on them I can. Any info on these particular crayfish is greatly appreciated. clean alkaline water
NO copper

I think these are the choices:

Procambarus alleni (Florida)

Cherax tenuimanus (Australia)

Cherax destructor (Australia)

I've also got one - and I don't know which it is.

thanks for the replys. do you have any idea of point of origin?? one of my concerns is ideal temperature as one of the species from Australia usually has a higher water temperature and I'd like to duplicate that enviroment to the best of my ability. typically all the north american and other species require cooler water temperatures, would you be able to say with any certainty that these are North American crays?? Sorry to be _ a pain in the butt, I know I should have asked all these questions in the store before I made the purchase.

All the blue crays you get here are Alleni with very few exceptions.

what gets shipped to me out of Florida invoiced as Alleni is NEVER blue

doesn't mean that blue ones are NOT Alleni

4 or five of the blue crays in stock came locally (bred & raised by) my freind Lea
2 or 3 of them came from one of 2 local wholesalers

neither would have any idea of origin or scientific name

I'm expecting a blue freshwater (with a yellow tail ) cray tomorrow

Sexing crays is really easy.

You grab the crayfish by the back, lift it up turn it upside down and pull the tail flat. The last set of legs, in a male will have sperm ducts going diagonally down from them, and in female these will be absent. You can probably find a pic online.

Lea came by today...she says the blue crays max out at 4"...

That max size means it is certainly not a Cherax, as they get HUGE.
