Ned,

Is a tank with a tempered glass bottom required to sit on a solid surface?

Can its stand support the four sides - as in a wrought iron stand - or does the tank need to be on a full, solid surface?

Thanks.

glass aquariums are designed to sit in their moldings
the moldings sit on any surface
(iron stand, pine stand, any solid table top)
as long as the whole perimeter is supported...
what size tank are you talking about?
why do you ask...
are you making your own home-made tank?

Standard 55 gal

No.

I've never had a tank with a tempered glass bottom and I don't want to screw up! I'd like to put it on a wrought iron stand w/out a piece of plywood between the tank and the stand.

From this it sounds like I can use the wrought iron stand and skip the plywood.

Thanks.

correct no plywood required
unless you find it useful
for some other purpose ...
like...
raising the height
or
making it easier to slide the tank
off or onto
the stand

the only diffrence is tempered is stronger and cant be drilled.i use
7 iron stands.their is no need for plywood because like ned
said, just the molding makes contact w/stand.i always use
about half inch thick weather stripping on top frame of iron stand.
this will help level out any uneveness between tank and frame.can also
use styrofoam but the weather stripping is easier.get it in black
and about the same width as the stand frame.
the only other diffrence between the glass is that tempered shatters(like a windshiled) and regular glass cracks.always use a level when setting up new tank.

i should have mentioned-use the heavy duty stuff with the sticky
back.home depot sells all diffrent sizes,it comes in a roll.for a 55
gallon you will need just over 10 feet.

Thanks for the info...

This tank will be next to another 55 (already in place)- and I'd like them to be at the same height. That was part of my motivation to find out what bottom support was necessary.

For tank leveling, I used to use a sheet of homasote(?) - greyish, a little spongy, maybe 1/2" thick, on top of plywood, on top of cinder blocks.

I like the weather stripping idea. The width is the same as the iron the tank sits on - what thickness do you suggest?

For anyone interested in details of tempered glass, I found this post:

Thanks.

whatever you put your tank on
you should be careful to avoid a twist
you want the stand to be very FLAT
