Ned (or anyone else):

Care to recommend which heaters you've found to be long lived and reliable (water temp matches what you set the heater at)?

I've recently had failures with Visi-Therm and Rena Cal. You can see moisture in the tubes - one stays on permanently, the other stays off. So much for submersible.

Both lasted for a couple of years, but I was (am) expecting more than that (silly me?).

Thanks.

You can see moisture in the tubes - one stays on permanently, the other stays off. So much for submersible. Submersible is fine, it's just the reliability of the brand.

My favorite brands are
Hagen Tronic (50 watt - 250 watt)
Ebo Jaeger (50 watt - 250 watt)
Sera (25 watt - 300 watt)

we can sell all above for $23-$30 and throw in a free thermometer

most above are in stock

it's best to mount submersibles sideways (horizontally) so that the heat escapes

I like to UNDER-watt the heater, in case it does stick ON, you'll have more time to stop a catastrophe

Thanks for the info.

I had one backup submersible in stock - a Rena :(
Hopefully I'll get a couple of years out of that one.

In my old fish-stuff box, I pulled out a Supreme (hang on type). Sometimes I wonder why I ever switched. It worked years ago and seems to work today. I guess I'm glad I kept them. It'll do for a while (I hope) - at least until my next trip to Uncle Ned's.

Yes, I know.

Probably 'cause they worked too well. I've got some that I've had in use for 15-20 years.

I don't suppose I should expect any of those listed (Hagen Tronic, Ebo Jaeger, Sera) to last that long.

I want to put my 2 cents in about heaters.I have about 10 tanks
set up now w/ several diffrent heaters.I bought 2 rena cal
excel within past 6 months.1st is stuck on 80 degs.
2nd is set at 78 and is heating tank too 82.Visa therm-2 or 3
w/condensation(all several years old),no failures yet.I have 2
stealth heaters less then a year old-work perfect except they
have no light to indicate they are on(I guess they have to be so stealth they cant even have a light).3 tronics-all perfect and
older.ebos-never a problem.Sorry for the long babbling but not
much more important then a good heater.
One last-thermal compact-had 2 or 3,all failed early.

I plan to try that Hydro inline heater or the ebo jager.
The oddball thing baout the ebo is that is says that it is not submersible. What is that all about?

Friends in Canada tell me that their Ebos also say that they are not submersible due to the heater not having a CSA seal (kind of like our UL [Underwriters Laboratories] seal). Those that have contacted the manufacturer have been told that the heaters are identical to those in our market, and would be submersible here.

The story I heard w/the ebo's is that eheim bought them out.
Eheim changed the packaging and it does say they are not
submersible, however the heaters themselves have not
changed a bit.For liability reasons(not sure why),eheim claims
they are not submersible.
