Hi

Thanks for all the valuable information I've been receiving from everybody on all my posts! I'm a beginner and I don't know a hell of a lot so I have lots of questions.

Is there any difference in all the carbon I see for sale? What should a good carbon consist of? What brands do you recommend? Does it make a difference what brand you buy? How often should you change carbon?

Thanks!

John

carbon serves essentially the same purpose as chemi-pure
(chemi-pure is carbon but also has resin beads which lock up even more dissolved chemicals than carbon alone)

the good thing about both products is that they lock up dissolved poisons

the bad thing about both products is that they lock up dissolved good stuff that plants and corals like

in short, I like to keep both products on hand for emergencys
but never run either all the time

you can tell good carbon from bad carbon by the price
if it costs $20 per pound it's going to be highly active and effective in small ammounts
if it costs $1 per pound it's probably doing more harm than good

if you do decide to use carbon, make sure to replace it often
(every 3 to 6 weeks MAX!)
carbon can also kick back all the poison it _ up after it's very old, and/or there's a chemistry shift
