A friend of mine gave me a new addition to my saltwater tank. He said it was a Banded Goby but I have not found any info about him. I have had this guy for about a week now and he doesn't seem to be eating. He only comes out at night and during the day he hides under the live rocks. I feed my fish frozen brine shrimp, blood worms and flake food. I am worried that my new friend is going to stave to death. My friend is telling me not to worry about him cuz he was well fed and that he just might not be hungry. I want to do some research on him but as I said no one seems to know anything about him. Can some please help me before I loose him.

Thank you.

You might try looking up banded eel, as it looks way more like an eel, than like any goby I've ever seen.

Looks like Pholidichthys leucotaenia to me.

Commonly called the convict blenny, convict goby, engineer goby, and a few other names, even though it is neither a blenny or a goby. :D

I've kept these in community tanks with no problems, they do like to hide alot at first but mine always figured out where dinner came from :)

for best health I would try feeding frozen mysid shrimp and/or enriched frozen brine shrimp (such as spirulina loaded brineshrimp or Omega3 brineshrimp, both available from San Francisco Bay brand among others) and a good quality flake (such as Omega One brand).

"plain" brine shrimp aren't very nutritious for marine fishes, and bloodworms do not have the right fatty acid profile (being freshwater).

More info on the fish can be found here:

Although Mia has a good point - from those photos, its hard to tell but it could also be a small banded moray eel... can you get a closeup of the head ?

If any of you get National Geographic, about two or three months ago there was an article on the convict blenny, which is what I believe it is. The article was rather wild, as in nature they are a wierd fish, the article is a good read.

my first guess was Engineer Goby also...
but it's way prettier than our adult engineer goby.
Engineer gobys are nocturnal when they are adults.
Very hardy and peaceful too.
I want some!
Where did your buddy get it!?
Yes, a close up picture would help.
As far as feeding,
I'd just leave the lights off and put some meaty food
in his cave.
