Close on the greek, according to planetcatfish-
Synodontis: From the Greek syn, meaning together, and odontos, meaning tooth; in reference to the closely-spaced lower jaw teeth.

So there is the double tooth reference. I can see where the 'without teeth' came from, as 'sin' in some languages means 'without'

I'm the one from NY that asks a ton of questions :wink:
