Hey Ned,
If you have a second, I have a couple of questions
regarding my upgrade from a 45 gal to a 125 gal
african tank.
Currently I have about 24 africans from the 2 big
lakes in my 45 all between 1.5" and 3". I am going to
me moving them into a 125 and am wondering what u
would recomend regarding the following:
1. Substrate??? I have 40lbs of white crushed coral
from an old tank, but did not like the way it turned a
bit brown on the top after a while???? So question is
if you were to start from stratch whats the best
substrate for a mixed african tank?????
Any light colored gravel will turn brown from the diatom algae after awhile.
If you use dolomite, crushed coral, 'rift lake special', aragonite, or 'eco-complete cichlid'
those will buffer to about pH 8....you can use any type gravel you want
but with standard gravels you may need to use chemical buffers such as Kent Malawi cichlid buffer.

2. Is there any cheap rock that you would recomend, I
have my 45 filled with lava but its probably only
enough for a pile in one corner, and get to be
expensive??
Cheapest rock around is local Fieldstone (most of the pieces are very big 'tho),
they sell it across the street from me at Swenson's granite,
or down the street from me at Medway block,
or if you're in the Sudbury area go to my uncle's place, Precourt Archetectural Stone.
I sell mostly Fellerstone aquarium rock ...$1.50 per pound for River Rock up to $3.75 per pound for Pagoda Stone.... they make about 25 types... we offer a 25% discount for 40 pound + purchases. Lava rock chunks would be $55 per 40 pound box.

3. Are two aquaclear 110 or 500's enough for that tank
or do you think i should bite the bullet and drill it
and put a big sump type wet dry filter under it???
Doesn't matter ...both are good...wet-dry's better...
If you want a drilled tank, DO NOT DRILL IT YOURSELF, order it custom-drilled
or just order the overflow tank.

4. While i got your ear I am currently feeding omega
one flake and cichlid attack pellets daily and tossing
in some romane once a week or so... any recomendations
on the food???
The most important thing about all food is that it is FRESH.
The most important thing about foods for Malawi cichlids is that it is
MOSTLY GREEN, spirulina algae or Kelp.
If feeding fresh veggies (like Romaine Lettuce or Peaches)
the most important thing is that you WASH the produce first with plain cold water.

Thanks for your help, and see you once the tanks set
up for more fish!!!
Thanks so much for your time,
Graig from Danvers, MA
PS
Here is a quick list of fish i have that i can id
Let me know if anything may be in danger or if i
should trade anyone in before they become dinner???

1 Hap Moori?? Blueish with large black dots
4 Brichardi or shall i say "rabbits"
1 Lam something or electric yellow
2 Kenyi - Petco called them that altleast (wish i new

2 Mbuna or something like that Petco
1 large silver fish with black horizontal line i

1 Synodonsis Multipulcanis cat (should i try and get a
couple more or is he cool alone??) MORE IS GOOD.
1 Neolamprologus ventralis - I believe yellow top fin
he/she is the smallest in the tank seems to be doin
fine kinda worried about?? Ok to stay??
1 Livingstoni

(HAP Livingstoni gets BIG, Pseudo Livingstoni only gets 4.5")
You should photograph your fish, and either email to me
or bring in the pictures
so you know what you got.
There's also good websites for cichlids,
like the American Cichlid Association.
We also sell really good cichlid books.

Just wondering about this fish? Is it long torpedo shaped? May sound like a Champsochromis Caeruleus, aka. Trout Cichlid from Lake Malawi. Gets big, up to 18". Just wondering, if this is what it is, I know somebody with a group of 6 of these looking for a home :?:
