Romer article on Apisto pH / temperature / sex ratio of offspring : Cacatuoides ....................................................pH .................................... Temp .....| ........ 4.5 ..........|......... 5.5.......... |......... 6.5 .......... f .... c .... | male ....| female ..| male ....| female ..| male ....| female ..| 73.4 ..23... ___________________ 19.8% .... 80.2% ... ___________________ 78.8 ..26... 84.3% .... 15.7% ...... 62.7% .... 37.3% ... 43.3% .... 56.7% .. 84.2 ..29... ____________________ 83.0% ... 17.0% ... ___________________ Agassizii ....................................................pH .................................... Temp .....| ........ 4.5 ..........|......... 5.5.......... |......... 6.5 .......... f .... c .... | male ....| female ..| male ....| female ..| male ....| female ..| 73.4 ..23... 42.2% .... 57.8% ..... 77.3% ..... 22.7% ... ___________________ 78.8 ..26... 60.2% .... 39.8% .... __________________ ___________________ 84.2 ..29... 9.10% .... 90.9% ..... 73.0% ..... 27.0% ... ___________________ It looks to me like both temp and pH affect the sex ratios; but differently for cacatuoides vs agassizii. It seems like for A cacatuoides: Lower temp drives more females (look at column of pH 5.5) Higher pH drives more females (look at row of 78.8 F) A agassizii seems a bit less clear: Maybe (or maybe not) higher temp drives more females (look at column of pH 4.5 vs 5.5) Higher pH appears to produce fewer females (look at row of 73.4 F and 84.2 F) |
