I'm curious as to what people think about a petshop raising some of its stock in the store.

Things like:

1. Guppies

2. Mollies

3. Swordtails

And selling them then offering them at a slightly higher price but giving a 1 week agreement on living or replacing them for free?

Is it worth it?

Do the majority of livebearer-buyers care where their fish come from? I would bet those that do care, would also care about the genetic integrity of the stock. It's easy to raise livebearers, but not as easy to raise quality (not inbred) fish ... while dealing with all the other fish store work. Going one step further, do the people who care about genetic integrity and the source of their fish even care about the guarantee?

Basically, I think they would need to be some pretty awesome livebearers to sell them at prices high enough to make up for all the cost (space, utilities, manpower) required to raise them to saleable size. They would need to appeal to more discerning aquarists than the "my-first-ten-gallon" crowd.

Just some thoughts,

We love local livebearers !!!!!!!!!

The only problem is
they're really only worth the price of a livebearer

even if they are healthier

just recently one of our customers b rought in some exceptionally red platys

we really appreciate it

i would get you more local livebearers but ours just don't seem "in the mood". You don't sell underwater candles do you?

Well, I do have a nice trio of fancy guppies who seem to be getting it on lately. One batch of babies was born last week.

I'll see what kind of males I get out of these batches - and they don't have the evil guppy disease either.

I need to come by and visit and see whats new in the store.
