bigger the better, 55 gallon minimum for 8 pcs

OVER filter for sure...
honestly does not matter the brand or style
do a minimum of 2 filters (assuming 1 will fail at some point)

also you want to keep temp for discus 84 - 87 F ...
warm water doesn't hold O2 well
so you need extra water flow for maximum oxygen

>Lighting?
does not matter

>Water changes?
as frequently as possible
biggest volume possible

if you are on MWRA water system
they have unstable water pH...
so I recommend very frequent but relatively small percentage water changes
... and / or
vat the water ahead of time
heat it
and let it de-gas and pH stabilize
for 6 or 12 hours before use

> Food
I suggest a very wide variety
2 or 3 flavors of flakes (at least 1 with Spirulina algae)
1 or 2 flavors of granules (my discus like Tetra color bits)
3 or 4 flavors of frozen food (Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, bloodworms, wattley discus formula, for example)
