Post subject:  Plant aquarium requirements

Hi Ned,
I have a freshwater community aquarium and I was considering adding a few hardy low maintenance plants. I don't want to do it if it's going to require a lot of effort or adding extra chemicals. Are there any lower profile plants that you sell that doen't require adding things to your tank? Also, I add aquarium salt. Will they live with that in the water?
Happy New year!

sure...
any of the:
Anubias
Crytptocorne
Aponogetan
Hygrophila
Crinum
Val
Java Fern
Java Moss
...we have several in stock now

most plants prefer at least 2 bulbs
the species above are the easiest (1 bulb would do, 2 is better)

you want a minimum of 6 hours on
maxiumum of 13 hours on

the most important thing is that the bulbs be less than 10 months old
and the hood is not dirty and blocking the light

I always have virtually zero salt in my plant tanks
I'm told valisnera can take a little

Thanks for the info.

I am going to ween the tank out of salt as it has had negative impact on plecos & invertebrates, plus I don't keep mollies any more. I'll do it with not replacing with water changes weekly. I'm assuming all wil never be out though. Anything to remove other than a complete water change after a few months?

I have 2 Aqua Glo bulbs, however they're over a year old. Plants won't grow with them? I'd rather not waste or have buy 2 new ones when they work great.

just do 2 or 3
50% water changes
should be adequate

buy 2 fresh bulbs
Life glo would be nice or Flora Sun
any brand is fine

bring an old bulb with you when you pick up the new bulbs so we get the right length and wattage

just be sure to get new bulbs every 10 months or so
