Are the NEW GUINEA RED RAINBOW LG the know as Red Iranians elsewhere? Are there any Milleniums left? It would be good to see the difference.

I had purchased a Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi back early November and asked for a male. The fins are yellow/orange but the body still isn't showing much color. Is there a chance I got a female, or do they have the same coloring? I may just be impatient :)

yes, they do take a long time to color
(they have a long life span too)

to increase growth rate with rainbowfish
I'd suggest the following:
> pH 7.2 - 7.8
> temp 78-81 degrees F
> MAXIMIZE oxygen saturation
(extra air pump, or extra filter, and/or lower water level to let water splash a little out of filter)
> FOOD: frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, color flake food,
spirulina flake food, live duckweed,
take the skins off some green PEAS and put them in,
we also have now frozen spirulina-brine shrimp
> frequent partial water changes
> put live plants in the tank
> keep multiple pcs.
(it's a schooling fish, sort of,
so males will show more color with a female or 8 to show off too)
> Lighting: it's hard to set up
but
rainbows colors show best with light shining from the front or the side
as opposed to a strip light on top

above is true actually for most fish
to increase growth and color

we have in stock
2 males Herbertax. rainbows from DNA'd confirmed pure bred
(were sick but ok now)
and a couple females ... probably pure bred but unknown

 Thanks for all of the valuable information as always.

I have most of the components already established. I spoke to you recently about plants. I'm weening the tank off salt and proper ph. We'll see how I do.

I noticed you had a pleco in a tank with Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi. Do they have deep yellow coloring? If you look at my chain you'll see I purchased one far over a year ago. It still only has faint coloring. I had asked for a male at the time to ensure the best color. If you have ones with good color, would you allow a swap?
