Hello,
I have a lot of dead rock coral, I got this from a guy who used to have tanks. This rack has been outside in his yard for a while.I would like to use it for My african tanks.
Can I boil this with bleach and water???? :?: :?: :?: :?:
I tried just boiling w/ water but it didn't work all that great. Is there a better way??
Thanks,
Joe

don't boil bleach

the fumes could be dangerous

NEVER mix bleach with ammonia

if you bleach stuff
do it outside

then you have to be sure
you get rid of all the bleach

rinse many times after bleaching with clean water
then use an over-dose of chlorine remover
then rinse again
then rinse again

you could also just buy nice new coral base rock from Uncle Ned's
$1.65 per pound
$1.23 per pound for 40 + pounds
then you wouldn't have to worry about any of that

you could soak it in a potassium permanganate solution

but then it would turn purple :?

oooh ooh! then you could dip it in a hydrogen peroxide solution and it would turn back to normal color!

Just like oxy-clean

Thank you,
but I don't know what potassium permanganate is? They started writing those "for dummies" books for me. Hmmm, purple?

potassium permanganate

very purple (turns brown when done oxidizing)
very cheap ($5 per pound?, do a froogle search)
very deadly (paint it on new steel, watch it rust out in hours)

...never mind

...just buy some new rocks

yes, all that plus
hydrogen peroxide neutralizes it and turns it completely clear.

they use it on those oxy-clean commercials where they dump purple stuff (which is really PP) into the laundry and then dump in oxy-clean and the purple magically disappears.

I use it for cleaning my tanks and equipment, and for dipping new plants etc. It basically kills any biological stuff it encounters.
