male swordtail was acting odd, started hanging around the bottom. today we got a good look and he appears to have fin rott, his top fin is like 1/2 as high and his long sword tail is 1/2 its normal length.
No other fish are acting odd nor do they appear to have any issues with their fins. We have removed him and are giving him Ampicillian.
probably bacterial, probably just him,
ampicillin should work
good idea to isolate in cases of likely bacteria
...best water parameters for swordtails are:
ph 7.2-7.8
temp 75 - 80 degrees F.
zero Ammonia and Nitrite
low or med Nitrate
hardness and Alkalinity: med to high
Should we put some drops in the 10 gallon tank as a preventative measure? Will it harm the cory's?
generally
I don't like to medicate unless needed...
in this case I would not use ampicillin on the main tank
in the case of
corydoras cats, angel cats, and a few other cats
and white clouds and tuffys
I avoid using quick cure or other formalin treatments
(or maybe very light doses)
but they can have just about anything else
If they don't eat the ampicillian will it get absorbed thru their gills?
pretty sure it will
also you are treating external bacteria anyway
Another question, can Cory's and Pleco handle salt in the tank if this were ick?
the most salt I normally use as medicine
on most fish
is 2 teaspoons per gallon...
at this level
I have treated virtually every category of freshwater fish
without a problem from the salt itself
