Can someone please tell me what type of barrel can safely be used for mixing water before adding it to the aquarium?

Some plastic trash cans smell like plastic - that doesn't seem like it could be a good thing. I know there are barrels sold as food-safe and drinking water-safe. Is that what's needed?

In another post Ned said:

invest in a good quality (round) rubbermaid barrel
Does this mean all Rubbermaid trash cans will fit the bill, or is there something more specific as to what the barrel is made of? For example, do you know if this one be ok : Brute Trash Can (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=p ... lpage=none)
Thanks!

No, I have no need to spend huge money on a food-safe barrel if the Rubbermaid is good. Besides, I'd rather spend the difference on fish at Uncle Ned's. :-)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Care to share why you're thinking of getting the food-safe barrels if the others are ok?

Thanks.

For what I do, the other barrels are more rigid. I transport water and use them for many different things with the ponds and aquariums I service. The Rubbermaid are fine for home use, but they just don't hold up for me.

I got the barrel yesterday morning and just wanted to say that it has revolutionized water changing. No more buckets to carry around!

Ned, you ought to package and sell Ned's Pretty Good Water Changing Kit: Size the barrel based on gallons to change, include a submersible pump, phython hose, recommended water conditioners, whatever else makes sense.

For those situations where you can't use gravity-only to siphon out the water, siphon into the barrel and from there pump it to outside (or a drain). I use it to water my house plants and send the rest outside.

Thanks!

we do sell all that already
except the barrels

I can get the fancy ones
but the prices are so high and then the shipping
I don't see any of my customers wanting me to stock them

then of course the regular barrels
all the hardware stores have them already quite cheap
