Its everywhere!
I have my 30 gal XH planted tank.
I have a Regent hang on the back Filter that came with a 55 gallon setup
Inhabitants are an angelfish, swordtail, krib, 3 koolie loaches, and 3 serpae tetras
After a couple of weeks I now have a pretty substantial algae attack goin on.
The worst part is that it is covering my plants and I fear it is affecting their health.
How can i remedy this problem?
I know many algae fixing solutions cant be used with planted tanks
I dont want to use the plecostamus I have because I dont want him eating my plants
I wonder if my lighting is too strong--> Its the dual sattelite compact flourescent sytems I bought off you
I also wonder if its a result of the CO2 system installed (one of those jungle fizz tablets). But I have only used it once thus far.

so....what are my options? why must this happen to me???

thanks for your time

I like Otocinclus for planted tanks- they generally won't mess with your plants , stay small, and love to eat algae. http://www.otocinclus.com

I would guess Ned will ask how long you are leaving the lights on, and yeah, an abundance of CO2 and nutrients can lead to an algae bloom. You may be giving more than your plants can use. Ned would know better, but cutting down the light cycle and nutrients would be a start.

In addition to synodontist's advice, I'd recommend a couple large water changes of at least 50%. Some planted tank enthusiasts will do this back to back two or three days in a row followed by a period of 24-48 hours of total darkness.

A UV sterilizer would work, but that'll cost you a few bucks.

I assume by algae attack you mean
algae on plants and walls, not green water
(green water you'd need the UV)

you simply need more scavengers
best one for your situation
is the Sicidium Algae Goby

other good scavengers that will help are
amano or cherry shrimp
oto cats
SAE's

we have all the above in stock

I suggest you get the cO2 going and keep it going as often as possible

as far as light goes
you have a very deep tank
so I'd say minimum 3 watts per gallon
minumum of 6 hours per day
maximum 12 hours a day

Do those Sicidium Algae Gobies like black beard or bush algae ?

I haven't been able to find any info on them online under that name.

Do you have any in stock ?

So far

I'll try them on black beard tonight

They never hurt plants

I have about a dozen in stock

West African
might be spelled
" sycidium " or something similar

http://www.hippocampus-bildarchiv.de/db ... Padang.htm

has a mouth and body like the picture above
(my fish have no red 'tho)
the picture above is an asian fish

but the genus name
is referenced even in Cuba

anyway
I get them from west africa
and
they eat crazy algae

might be a very ancient fish
and similar looking things live all over the world

might be my importer just doesn't have a correct name

this is the spelling my importer uses:
Sicydium
