On sat. I lost a fish to what I think may have been ICK. None of the other fish in the tank show any signs of it. My LFS told me to remove the fish and not treat the tank. Do you think I should salt the tank? I have been keeping fish for over 10 years now and I have never had a ICK outbreak. I have keepr my tank temps arrount 81 until I swiched the tank over to Africans. Any help would be great. Thanks T.J.

How long has the tank been established ?

Were all of the cichlids added two weeks ago, or was that just the most recent ?

I love the fact that so many people come to good ole Ned for advice, but try to save a few bucks buying cheap fish.

I did know this was coming, First off by no means did I buy cheap fish from Petco. I did not buy fish from the assorted Cichlid tank for 3.49ea. I spent some good money for the fish I bought close to 9.85 ea. Now lets get to the story of how I came to UNCLE NEDS: If it was not for the young man working the fish room at PETCO I would have never come to you place. He told me about you and that if I wanted to know anything about africans to come to your shop. I have been to your store and I have bought stuff from you and I will again I am sure. Why anyone needs to bash me because I bought fish from PETCO I will never know. I have been to many LFS and the info I got from the young man at PETCO was the best that I had been given. I have been fish keeping for over 10 years everything from comunity tanks to full blown reefs. I am not a newbe and I think if you are new to somthing and need help ask for it in the best place possible. Sorry for the rant....

Thanks Ned for th advise

The Fish Guy often types without thinking
....just the way he is.
He's really a good guy.

The problem I have with Petco is the management,
actually the upper level management.
Years ago we were a vendor to them and they were almost useless paying so slowly.
I have no problem with the staff (alot of them shop here).

They have bizarre rules (I've been told)
that if the fish are sick
they can't use medicine from the sales floor...
they have to use medicine from the back room that comes from the home office.

The good thing about Petco is they have gotten alot of people into the hobby with the huge stores, signs, and advertising budgets.
The bad thing about Petco is they may have driven people out of the hobby with sometimes bad fish, sometimes bad advise, and sometimes wrong equipment.

ah yes, I do tend to blurt things out. You should see how I am in person...ha ha
What I really meant to say Ned beat me to it.
It would however be nice if they would hire staff to work in their fish rooms who have actual experience in keeping fish. i have been in those stores and heard advice being given out that was just absolutely wrong. I guess it is similar to going to Home Depot and asking someone in the plumbing department a question only to find out that the person you are talking, and getting advice from works in the light department. I think it's human nature for people to NOT want to say " I'm sorry i don't know the answer to that, let me find out" It's really OK to not know everything. I learned that in my support group.......FA
