Hey Ned,

I got my cichlid tank started last Saturday and introduced six juveniles I got from you:

1 yellow lab, 1 mbamba yellow top, 1 lemon peacock, 1 phenochilus, 1 VC10 (my favorite) and 1 ahli.

Before I get to the point, I'm confused about the ahli. Haplochromis ahli are the same as sciaenochromis ahli (?) but different from the sciaenochromis fryeri (electric blue hap) which also seem to be sometimes called haplochromis ahli (??). Could you help me clarify the matter and tell me what I have?

set-up: 75 g, 78F, pH 8.0, KH 7, GH 15, no ammonia, no nitrite. This is a new set-up but I used some ehfisubstrat from the canister of my established, healthy community tank.

No aggression as far as I can tell. I've been feeding small amounts of Ned's spirulina flakes and everybody's been eating well, except for the ahli who has not eaten yet. What do you think?

Thanks.

The correct name of the fish you got is sciaenochromis freyeri.
Sciaenochromis Ahli is very similar but darker with bars and not as pretty. It's also rarer, and not available yet tank raised.

The Ahli not eating is a bad sign,
but whereas you just bought it,
simply bring it back and I'll treat it here
and give you a new one.
If you had had all your fish for some time and were getting problems,
I would suspect a disease called Malawi bloat,
and would instruct you to treat as written here:
