Well, looks like I must have missed some snail eggs while setting up my new 45 gallon planted tank, as I have a population of what I think are pond snails crawling around. I've been removing them manually, but I would like some better way of control. Current (intentional) inhabitants of the tank are 7-8 otocinclus, 5 corydoras schwartzi, and 5 cherry shrimp, with a school of tetra still to be introduced. Are there any snail eating fish that would leave the cherry shrimp alone? If not, any other ideas other than manual removal?

Thanks,
Chris

Karen Randall suggested Raphael Cats to me,
or loaches such as Dario, Lohachata, or Bumese border.
She said that Clown loaches would eat the snails but may also eat some plants (I was skeptical on that.)
Puffers of course will eat snails, but are nasty to most fish.

As far as what I have in stock,
the Lohachata Loaches will do the trick...
Clown loaches are also in stock.
hope to have the other species in stock by Friday.

I would remove the cherry shrimp 'til your snail eater has done the job.
(Cherry shrimp can live in a fish bowl.)

I have a 29 gallon tank that has been set up for about 5 years.
The tank is heavily planted and pretty much overstocked with
community fish.About 3 years ago I noticed pond snails(small, round snails). They must have come in on some live plants.
Within a short period of time there were thousands of them.I had
tried a few things including removing and crushing them.I also
would use a small cup with a food wafer inside. It was designed to only allow the snails to get in.I would leave this out at night and collect the snails from the cup the next day.I killed many snails but it was like a drop in the Pacific.
I would not use the commercial snail control products. The tank could have a huge ammonia spike etc. w/ a massive die-off of snails. It will never get them all anyway and can be dangerous to certain fish.I finaly introduced two Burmese Border loaches.Honest to God w/in about a month or so I never saw another snail again.I have had this problem in other tanks and NOTHING works as well as the Burmese Border loach.I have 3 now in this tank and they stay small(about 3 inches) and are very peaceful.
On another note one has been ripe twice. She is larger then the other two and her color gets much lighter. She stays inside a plastic pot and digs tunnels under the pot.I have not seen eggs or fry but no doubt she was very pregnant and showing spawning behavior.
