Hi Ned,

Trying to settle a discussion with a co-worker. The question is.... My new oceanic system set up a few weeks ago has an odor coming from water, what is it? He opens the cover for a while and it goes away, closes it for 6 hours and it comes back.

I suggested it may be H2O2 coming from some decaying matter.

Do these systems have history of generating odor?

Greg

The odor is certainly not Hydrogen Peroxide
(I had to google "H2O2")

If you mean Hydrogen Sulphide...the answer is maybe.

Personally,
I prefer to have uncovered tanks
....
I call it gas exchange....
unfortunately, many species of fish jump
so they need to be covered

this is an advantage of having
an air pump,
an aquaclear or other power filter,
or a wet dry or sump system

I would not be surprised if you did get an odor
with a canister filter only
or
a submerged power filter only
with a tightly fitting hood
