This cichlid I have had for sometime now has a cloudy right eye, and only has the use of his two side fins. Recently developed a white patch on his back near his rear fin.

Does anyone have any idea about this problem? I also noticed that his rear fin appears to be rotting.

Whoa. I've had cichlids for a bit and never heard of all these symptoms. Sounds like there may be a couple of things going on. Cloudy eye, rotting fin, and can only use two fins. How long has he been this way? Is the cichlid with other fish and what size tank? What kind of cichlid? Have you checked the water parameters? If it is any kind of common ailment, Ned probably knows.

You need to look at the quality of your water. Ned can recommend the proper medication. It all begins with good water quality. Please test and post results along with witch type of cichlid you have.

Hopefully it is just a common infection after being beaten by another cichlid, or just poor water from not being changed often enough, or having too little filtration or over-feeding.

Hopefully it is NOT Malawi Flesh Eating Bacteria.

(a prevoius post in this same forum)

If it is Malawi Flesh Eating Bacteria, all the Malawi cichlids in this tank are in danger.

Yes: we need to know the water parameters, pH. amminia,
tank mates, tank size, species, temperature, and all that stuff as soon as possible.

The tank is a forty gallon breeder style tank. The filter is an Eheim Ecco 2236. The temperature is about 74-75 Degrees. The PH level is around 7.6 and the ammonia level is less than .5 ppm. This fish was bought, when I started the tank last spring, in a group with some other fish, so I do not know the name of this fish but the other tank mates include an Electric Blue Cichlid, Electric Yellow Cichlid, Acei Cichlid, Livingstoni Nimbrochromis Cichlid, Red Zebra Mbuna, Auratus, Bumblebee Cichlid and 2 Synodontis Multipunctatus Catfish. There are 3 other that were in the original group I had bought that I am unaware of the name.

Here are some pictures of the sick fish:

Don't worry

this is not Malawi Flesh Eating Bacteria

just an ordinary ass whooping by an enemy cichlid
(Malawi Flesh ripping male cichlid)

the guilty party is the one in your tank with NO wounds

this victim needs to be isolated immediately
erythromycin will help (EM or Maracyn)

In your case I suggest you get 2 back-up small tanks
always on sale at uncle Ned's Fish Factory

One for the victim
one for the bully

If you can't get the seperate tank at least get
a Net Breeder, to seperate either the victim or bully

I am pretty sure the guilty party is the Bumblebee. He did seem to become a bully when he gained size. I have babies in a breeder net already, Should I buy another net or can I through the injured fish in with the babies?

get another net breeder or really you need another tank
(just the basics, filter heater tank ..that's all...
$50 for a 2, a 5 or a 10 gallon)

I don't even carry Bumblebee Crabro (this is why)
