Hey Ned,

I came in this morning to find one of the Goo-Obo's on my desk a good 2' from the tank. It is covered, except for the area were the filter hangs. Are these typically jumpers? I want to replace it, but I don't know which sex I lost. Do they get along ok, if there is more than just a pair? I need to find a better way to cover that area I guess.

Thanks,

Ben

These gudgeon's are insane. I just heard a splash, thought the other had leaped out, after a few minutes of searching I looked in the filter and the remaining one had jumped into it. It is the smallest hang on back I could find- cascade I think. I turned it off for now- they seem to be atracted to the current and jump into it like trout. Should I use a different kind of filter entirely?

try an inside power filter like a quick filter and power head
or a fluval plus...
I saw photos of their environment...
they are trying to jump from pool to pool up hill in a stream...
at the store I leave the tank half full with floating duckweed
like killis

A river tank sounds fun. These guys would certainly make good use. Difficult to do?

After hearing about their natural habitat, it does makes snes. Very interesting.

As to my initial question- are they picky about being in pairs? I don't know which sex kicked it.

I've never made a river tank

basically you'd have power head with a sponge filter at the low end
then pump it up to a mini water fall

it would be kind of involved to make a stack of rocks to make the pools
maybe silicone the rocks together

next slow day I'm trying one...

I'm going to but in and ask for pictures of a river tank if either of you end up trying one out. I'm a big fan of DIY type projects. I'm currently experimenting with expanding foam for a mini paludarium (10g) with the intent of keeping red clawed crabs and bumble bee gobies in there (brackish/cute/small theme going). Working with the foam has been pretty easy. I plan on sealing it with a 2 part epoxy by west systems when/if I get it shaped like I like. Might be a possible medium for a river tank...

I've got an old Aquarium Fish magazine with part 2 of an article about a DIY river tank - part one has the construction, I probably have that article someplace - they siliconed glass panels into a 55g tank to make "pools" and "falls" -- basically picture the "River Tank" brand tanks that Perfecto used to distribute (invented by a guy from URI ) and replace the plastic dividers with glass covered by slate.

When Goo Obo gudgeons first were brought into the boston area (and were very rare) I lost the better part of a dozen small ones to jumping :(

I'm keeping my adult trio in a 15g column tank (about 13" x 13" x 20" tall) with an Aquaclear 200 for flow, lots of driftwood and coconut caves, and some java fern and anubias.

I guess they still make those Perfecto river tank kits- but they seem way too expensive. Here is what it looks like, seems like you could do the same just attaching acrylic with silicone.

http://www.rivertank.com/

The river sections look good, but I think the background looks kinda cheesy. I wonder if you can just use the inserts and not all the background stuff. You ever offered these Ned? I would bet the expanding foam is cheaper.

I think your info is old

but
I have an email in to Perfecto

They usually get back to me in a day

NO River Tanks are listed from my distributor.

I can build one...
I just need 3 hours...
but which 3?

I'm thinking

lay down a flexible tube or CPVC pipe for a quick filter or
other internal filter
or even a small canister filter

squirt (carefully) expanding black foam
into tank
in big hills along the back

let dry

carve cliffs and pools as needed
with sharpened spoon or similar tool
out of hardened foam
