My choc Chip star that i have had about a year does not look so good this week. Been upside down 2 days, looks like decaying/rotting away. Almost pulled and flushed but i see one arm that still has "moving" tentacle thingys. Any ideas/advice?

hmmm
hard invert to kill...
are other snails, feather dusters, crabs, etc okay?

check for copper poisoning (fish medicine or fish food)
also excessive heat
also incorrect salinity...starfish need 1.023 minimum

any chance a harlequin shrimp is in the tank?
or any other animal that can eat a starfish?
a big beaked fish

Thanks for fast reply. Just checked and found salinity about 1.020, so i gave a dash and took it up to 23-24. Have a hlf dozen or so small crabs/snails, but they do not appear to be eating it. Also a small yellow tang, that seems to "explore" it hear and there. I cant beleive this guy would come back from his present condition, i wondered about severing arms with starfish ??

Never add dry salt to the tank.
If you need to increase salinity, add a completely dissolved slurry of super salty water.

That was probably most of the problem.

What is the temperature? Should be below 76 degrees F.

What about food?
tank too clean?
zero algae, zero leftover food?
Any copper sulphate in your prepared food ingredients?

Are they healthy?

I doubt yellow tang is eating it.

The arms of a starfish WILL grow back (slowly)
but not of course if the body is dead.

Nitrate: 200
Nitrite: 1.0
Total Alkalinity: 300
PH Level: 8.8
Salinity: .023
Temp: 77

Nitrate: 200 that's okay
Nitrite: 1.0 (SHOULD BE ZERO)
Total Alkalinity: 300 that's okay
PH Level: 8.8 that's okay
Salinity: .023 (I ASSUME YOU MEAN 1.023, WHICH IS OKAY)
Temp: 77 that's okay

tank smell
NOT GOOD,
CHANGE SOME WATER FOR SURE,
CHECK FOR DEAD FISH ETC IN TANK,
CHECK FOR PROPER FLOW OF WATER,
CHECK THAT TANK IS NOT "AIR TIGHT"
AND IS ABLE TO GET GOOD GAS EXCHANGE.
