fish for presents or prizes for noobs

frankly
goldfish are a terrible prize

the ideal set up for goldfish
is 10 gallons per goldfish
with a filter

a better bowl fish
is
a Betta splendens (siamese fighting fish)
http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/anaba ... /betta.htm
or
Paradise Fish
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_macropodus.php

with either species
care is the same

the only thing is
Paradise fish JUMP better than bettas
so they need a taller bowl
(so you can keep it shallow or covered)

the good thing about paradise fish is
they are more cool tolerant than bettas

so either way

they are both good bowl fish
either should have a life span of 3 years plus

as far as goldfish are concerned
I think you need to be lucky and/or good to keep them in a bowl

Bettas are WAY easier
