Hi Ned,

What do you suggest for treating a jurupari with what I think has roundworms?

Clout did not work. I am now trying Jungle Parasite Clear. Someone else suggested malachite green and formalin--I am dubious.

TIA

Peter

I think "PraziPro"
or any medicine that has Praziquantel or Fubendazole in it
(my spellings may be incorrect).
I'll try to get it in for Friday.
Wild - caught fish like eartheaters and Discus often have worms.
Good stuff to have on hand.

something else you can try thats a little easier to get your hands on: fresh pressed garlic. take a clove and press it and finely mince the pieces and feed it to your fish. now, i wouldnt use the whole thing in one shot as its powerful stuff for larger eartheaters id try 1/4 clove a day or less.

ive given it to loaches that have shown signs of internal parasites with great results. i also know a few who use it with discus with similar results.

thanks, ned

The JPC has praziquantel and diflubenzuron in addition to metronidasole and acriflavine.

Do you know how long the treatment regime should be?

I was wondering if eartheaters were usually wild-caught...

What is " the JPC". ??
You do not need acriflavine.

Depends on manufacturer, directions should be on the bottle.

Yes, almost all large Eartheaters available are wild caught.
They do sometimes farm raise
Surinamensis, Jurupari, and a few Southern Brasil ones...but these would be shipped small or medium at most.

Its is very difficult to make a diagnosis on external disease/parasites,never mind internal parasites. Most internal parasites show the same symptoms-either a pinched or swollen abdomen, off color, stringy feces(usually white),spitting out food, gagging motions and fish may stop eating.
I have bought numerous wild-caught fish and have seen this several times.A lot of these parasites are very difficult to get rid of.My old thinking was to treat w/mild medicines, trying not to stress the fish out furthur. If the parasites are not destroyed, the fish will probably also end up w/ a bacterial infection and recovery is slim.If the fish are still eating, treat w/Jungle anti-parasite food.if they don't eat that, mix metronidazole in w/your food and the fresh garlic.Following the directions,I would use the Praziquantel.Metronidazole can also be added to the tank water.Salt may also help.I do water changes daily or every other day when treating fish.Make sure to addv xtra meds. that were taken out w/ the water changes.
I have has success w/ Fluke Tabs.I used meds. in the food also while using Fluke Tabs.
I don't know your situation-Quarantine tank,if not, other fish in your tank etc.Whatever;if your fish has internal parasites/worms,I would not be afraid to overtreat rather then undertreat.
Read everything you can about them and good luck.

Secondary infection? Check!

there are three zebras in the tank that are showing symptoms.

I am starting to think about putting the jurupari down if the worms show up again.

i forgot-there is one medicine that works levamisole.it is a dewormer that is also used in animals-cattle,horses etc.
a company makes a medicine that contains levamisole and is
used for treating aquarium fish.pure levamisole can only be obtained from a vet.
the aquarium product can be obtained from certain wholesalers.
i cant remember the name of the aquarium medicine.
someone must know this

Hi Ned,

Do you have the fubendazole in stock?
I was actualy thinking of a different name-It's hyphenated,like
disc-cure or something.I'm not thinking of the old Aquatronics Co.
drug that contained mostly metronidazole in the capsules.
This stuff is in a jar...powder and liquid.I't s like 8 percent levamisole,which is what works thou.,so I'm told.
I'm coming down on my days off-Mon or Tues anyway.

Thanks...Tom
