I’ll be visiting your store in the next couple of weeks but I wanted to ask you a few questions before then. GREAT THANKS
I've setup a 50 gallon "breeder tank" which is 36" long and 18" wide. I have a 10 gallon tank with 6 Black Skirt Tetras and 2 Peppered Corydoras. I'm going to be transferring them into the 50 gallon tank with an Emperor 280 filter, 200 watt heater, bubble tube etc. I've conditioned the water with Tetra AquaSafe and aquarium salt.
USUALLY NO SALT IS NEEDED, IN CASE YOU NEED IT FOR A MEDICINE, YOU CAN HAVE 2 TEASPOONS PER GALLON MAXIMUM.
I was told by an employee at PetSmart that I should remove 10 gallons from the 50 gallon tank and transfer the water from the 10 gallon tank to it, along with its gravel and plants. Should I do this? YES
Will this cycle the new 50 gallon tank faster? YES
He also told me to put fish food flakes in the new 50 gallon tank without any fish in it because it will decay and create beneficial bacteria. Is this true?
KIND OF...YOU DON'T NEED TO...
WHAT HE MEANS IS...UNEATEN FOOD MAKES AMMONIA...
AMMONIA FEEDS BENEFICIAL BACTERIA THAT EATS MORE AMMONIA
WHICH FISH PRODUCE
Also, I know the general rule is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water SORT OF...
but I'd like to keep more than the recommendation. All the fish I plan to get are non aggressive community fish ranging from 1.5" to 3". Here is the list of fish I would like in my 50 gallon tank. Please let me know if this will be overcrowded.
6 Black Skirt Tetra
6 Fancy Guppy
6 Cardinal Tetra
6 Platy
4 Corydoras (3")
2 German Ram
2 Betta (1M, 1F)
2 Dwarf Gourami
2 Boesemani Rainbow
1 Otocinclus Catfish
Is 37 small fish too many for my 50 gallon tank?
THAT'S PROBABLY FULL BUT NOT RIDICULOUS...
I HAVE A 40 GALLON WITH 300 CARDINALS, THEY ARE FINE (TEMPORARILY).
They will all be introduced very gradually over a year or so.
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO GO THAT SLOW, BUT THAT'S FINE
Are any of the fish in my list incompatible?
2 Betta (1M, 1F)
2 Dwarf Gourami
THE ABOVE 2 ARE VERY LIKELY TO FIGHT VIOLENTLY.
Do you have any other suggestions?
THE PALLET IS LIMITLESS, THERE ARE SO MANY NICE FISH AVAILABLE,
JUST LOOK THROUGH BOOKS AND THE INTERNET, LET ME KNOW WHAT YOUR FAVORITE FLAVOR IS.
