So I've recently become very interested in Tropheus, and I'm thinking about getting a tank set up to house them within about a year. I still have a lot to learn before I can do it right. So far, I've learned that I need to get them in groups (at least a dozen) and they're strict vegetarians. I need to have sand substrate, and lots of rocks. What's the minimum/good size tank to have for them? Can you have different kinds in the same tank to make up the group...or do they all need to be the same? I've been trying to find information for care, but it's pretty scattered. Any books or sites that any of you can recommend?

Thanks for any info!

I still have a lot to learn before I can do it right. TRUE
I've learned that I need to get them in groups (at least a dozen) TRUE
and they're strict vegetarians. VERY TRUE
I need to have sand substrate, NOT NECESARILY TRUE
and lots of rocks.THEY PREFER IT BUT IT IS NOT VITAL
What's the minimum/good size tank to have for them? 75 GALLON MINIMUM, 125 GALLON OR LARGER WOULD BE BEST
Can you have different kinds in the same tank to make up the group...or do they all need to be the same? THEY CAN BE DIFFERENT, SUPPOSEDLY THEY DON'T CROSS BREED, A LARGE GROUP WE BE HELPFUL
I've been trying to find information for care, but it's pretty scattered. Any books or sites that any of you can recommend?

Are you ready to:

do water changes every week?

pick-up every rock and item in the tank before you start?

do a gravel vac on a moments notice?

have a tank with only tropheus?

if so, then I would read up as much as you can and ask current tropheus owners about there success.
