UNCLE NED,
I have a situation that I don't know what to try, I have a 90 gal. tank with about sixteen mixed hap's ,peacocks. My question is a have a red empress male about two yrs. old and a juvy elec. blue ahli. They had deicide to stop eating for about a week or so know. They seem healthy, still have their color I had a pair of peacocks do this too about a year ago, they ended up dying on me, so with weekly 25 gal. water changes and I feed the tank twice a day, what might have sent them into this mood? There is no hostility in the tank, no one picks on either and the red empress has two healthy females, but nothing to change his mood, Please help if possible! Thanks

Even if you do everything right
if you keep cichlids
you will eventually see bloat

I think all the info you need should be at my library page

Good morning NEd,
I was wondrering what you thought about adding a uv sterilizer to a 90 gal. peacock, hap tank? I also i'm trying to treat a hospital tank for bloat. I just lost my red empress last night. I have my alhi still left in the hospital tank, i started treatment last night, when is it save again to try and feed him while under treament.

Do you have anyadult red empress or super red ones in stock and if so, how much?

Thanks,
E.A

It wouldn't hurt to add a UV sterilizer to the system...
we have several brands on sale.

I have five 3-4" Red Empress in stock
(not in color yet)
$25 each

Good morning Ned,
I seem to have a recuring situation of some from of black colored alge going.

I tested my water the other day
ph 8.4
ammonia 0
nitrates o
nitrites 40 (is this too high)

I'm thinking i might be a coper or sulphate issue? I 'm asking because i have lost about 5-6 fish over the past couple of weeks i thought i had another bout of the blout, but the fish never got swollen bellies.

Any idea for a cure would be great, since i just did a 25 gallon water change i will need to wait a few days to hopefully bring a water sample down to see if yoy guys might have an answer for this black stuff in my tank.

Thanks again Ned,
Ed

losing 5 fish in 2 weeks is too many...
something is wrong...
you should lose maybe 10% per year...

check for:
poisons
over-medication
bad, old, or wrong medication
too much salt
bad food
aggressive tankmates
overheating
low oxygen

40 nitrAte is not too high
400 IS !

bring in some water
and a sample of that algae

if you have a fish that is sick, but still alive,
bring it in in a shallow bucket
(I can't tell anything from a dead fish)
