I'm in the process of setting up my first salt water tank, and i've been told that using RO water is important....is this true? and if so is there a cheaper way to get RO water other than buying a $200 filter system?

....i appreciate any help

It really depends on what you are aiming for. If you want to go for a full reef then you will need pure water. You can go with a water deionizer if R/O is to expensive. You can get an aquarium pharm. deionizer for about 70$.

If you want a fish only. Then a plain old water conditioner witch binds up the bad stuff for your fish will work fine.

we sell RO water for 50 cents per gallon.
most people transport it in plastic gasoline containers (new of course)
We also sell new RO systems,
we also have 2 slightly or barely used RO systems for sale...
you don't necesarily need RO for a reef, the most important thing
to get rid of is copper (your tap water may have no copper anyway), we also want to get rid of phosphate....
if your investing in hundreds of dollars worth of coral,
$150 for pure water is a reasonable cost.

If using RO for either salt or Fresh,
you need to add back minerals...
in saltwater we add a little super buffer dKH in addition to the salt mix...
in freshwater we add back RO right.
