I recently was given a bunch of Java Fern plants which I added to my tank. I wanted to know what is the best lighting situation for these plants so they are not overrun by brown algae like has happened to me in the past.

as far as brown algae goes...
just get some Oto cats, they'll clean the plant leaves for you

as far as enough light for Java fern goes ...
I'd say a minimum of 0.5 watts per gallon
and
a minimum of 5 hours of light per day
(maximum of 12 hours of light per day)

hey ned you just stated that Oto cats will do the job on brown algae. I was wondering if i could buy a few and put them in my 55 gallon goldfish tank (that has brown algae) and then transfer them to their new permanent home, which is a 30 gallon long with plants.

Are they compatible for a short time?

you probably need a bigger algae eater
depending on the size of the goldfish

albino bushys are good
