Hi Ned, Hopefully you can help me. I've been trying to get together a west
African biotope tank (which I used to have when I lived in the Midwest) for
years now. Problem is, I can't find any decent fish in Southern
California. Apparently freshwater fish keeping is just not appealing if
you don't have winter to deal with. I see you carry or can get most of
what I'm looking for.

First question, am I crazy sending across the country for Nannochromis and
Pelvicachromis?
It's expensive for us to ship that far. Thanks to TSA (our heroes and fearless leaders)
a legitimate businessman such as myself has to jump through hoops to ship air freight...
anyway...I'd have to ship to you that far away via UPS Next Day Air...a whopping $99 (aprox.) per box.

Do you have a west coast source for them?
No....maybe Steve Lundblad near Oregon.
The cichlid exchange he calls it.

Southern, I
have found some sources way up north. I found and bought a very expensive
pair from a LA store, which were sickly and died the same day. (Sent my
wife to get them....Oops.)
Say NOTHING except "thanks honey bunch".

I wouldn't send you anything that wasn't healthy.

Second question, other than what I've read anything I should know about
keeping/breeding them?
well...as my brother Dan says...
there's not a lot you NEED to know...
but there IS a lot you CAN know...

check out my friend Ariel's site
blackwaterfish.com

Third, I prefer captive bred so long as its healthy stock, but maybe you
can make me more knowledgeable about the wild collections. Are they a
sustainable collected group and environmentally collected?

OK OK OK...this is gonna sound like YELLING...but I'M NOT YELLING...I'm just SAYING...
This is very long winded, skip to the end if you are wise.

I'm not gonna RushLimbaugh you (I've invented a verb.)
(I can't stand him either, I can't stand anyone...I'm an Independent, I have problems with everyone).
Some well-intentioned people
(you know who you are...watching PBS, listening to NPR, voting Democrat)
have taken as FACT the OPINIONS they hear from some of the above.

Here are some facts.
Africa is in trouble because it is poor.
If more people would BUY African stuff (in our case ..fish)
Africa would be LESS poor, and therefore
in LESS trouble.

Elephant Ivory costs a lot...(pick a number?)...$20,000 per pound (guessing).
So, there are massive abuses....

(thanks to the ASIANS who buy it...YES..MOSTLY ASIANS
...not ALL Asians,
I'll never hear the end of this...they know who they are...the truth hurts like FIRE...
the same gang of NIMRODS that think grinding a Rhino Horn or a Seahorse is good for their sex life.)

I rant, I digress...back to my point...
Some places in Africa have too many elephants,
these should be harvested and utilized to make their owners, THE AFRICAN PEOPLE, healthier and happier...
No place in Africa has too many Nanochromis Parilus...

Fortunately for the Nanochromis,
they only cost $40 per ounce ($1,250 per pound).

...unlike the poor Elephant, which is worth $20,000 per pound (guessing).

...Therefore..[.I'm finally getting to the point ...an accomplishment while drinking]
there will never be enough demand on wild African cichlids to endanger their existence...

What endangers the existence of the wild African cichlids,
is
the INABILATY of their human patrons to enhance their OWN existence.
The humans will not be able to enhance their lives unless they have MONEY.
They won't have money unless WE buy what they have to sell.
They sell FISH!!!
BUY THE FISH!!!!
NO BRAINER!!!!

So...
my young friend...
if you want to save the Brasilian rainforest...
BUY BRAZIL NUTS and CARDINAL TETRAS.

If you want to save the West African Rainforest ...
BUY CARVED WOODEN STATUES
and DISTICHODUS DECIMACULATUS.

By the way... we're all screwed...

...and I'm not going to hurt anybody...
so get all your canned goods
and dig a hole in your cellar...
these mofo's are the most useless pieces of crampollla EVER.

I DEFY them to defend themselves.
They won't.
They can't.
They are a useless WASTE of YOUR MONEY.
Please fire them. Please.
