I've noticed that in the general area (4 towns) all of the small petshops do not heat the tanks for their tropical fish... is there a reason for this?

at least in our store
it's more economical
just to heat the whole room
(we have 200 tanks)
so we'd not only need 200 heaters ...but also 200 plugs!

just set the coldwater tolerant species up on the lower racks

heat stratifies

in my store we keep the thermostat at 80
the top tanks go to 77
the middle row goes to 75
the botom tanks are about 69

We do have to use a chiller on our coral reef tanks in the summer

the air temp in the store in usually 82+ in the summer
the corals need really bright lights
which can overheat the water
(corals really suffer at above 81)
we like to leave the chiller at 75

the other option for the summer is to use air conditioners

but it's a major engineering problem with 4500 square feet of uncovered water making humidity
