Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on whether captive bred Apistogramma Agassizii could be persuaded to spawn in a well planted (CO2, etc) tank using local MWRA water in the Boston area. I know Aggies tend to be more fickle in terms of spawning than Cacatuoides, generally preferring softer water and such. MWRA water is a bit...unnatural, what with its relative softness combined with buffered up pH levels. However, with CO2 going in at a bubble per three seconds, pH is a bit lower in my tank.

In any event, I know you guys probably come across some locally bred Aggies and I was curious if any breeders have success using MWRA tap. For what it's worth, I'm not looking to breed Aggies so much as enjoy the spawning/breeding behavior. I know I could gets cacs to spawn, but all things being equal, I prefer Aggies for overall appearance and behavior.

This is a heavily planted 37 gallon bowfront, recently set up with no fish in it yet. Ideally, I'd love to house a male Aggy with a small harem of females, along with a few other carefully selected fish...with the Aggies being the main focus. The only thing that would make choose cacs instead would be if there is no chance of the Aggies spawning.

Much thanks.

Jason

well basically
if they are happy
they are likely to spawn

I think the eggs will hatch as long as the pH is below 7,
but from what I read
you usually don't get a 50/50 sex ratio in the group of fry
unless the pH is well below 6,
for agaasizi

for cacatuoides,
from what I read,
you don't get a 50/50 sex ratio of the fry
unless the pH is above 6.5

Thank you for the response on this one.

Do you have any aggies in the store right now? Was thinking of picking up a pair/harem on Saturday if you had any.

Thanks.
