I currently have a 30 gallon saltwater reef tank that i am thinking of converting to fresh water planted tank. What new equipment would i have to purchase and what could i reuse. I have 4 bulb t-5 fixture on the tank now. I assume that i would need to purchase a filter and new substrate. Can you suggest what i would need and what it might cost. The filter would have to go under the tank or over the tank(if possible) because the tank is 3" from the wall.

I like canister or hang on back power filters for plant tanks
(as opposed to Wet/dry sump set up's)

obviously new substrate
my favorite is regular #1 quartz gravel and laterite

What canister filter do you recommend for a 30 gallon and does the canister have to be below the tank or can it be placed in a cabinet above the tank?

canister filters must be at least 4 inches below the top of the tank
(normally put on the floor)

no one manufactures an above the tank filter
but I could design one for you
with a small submersible pump
(which would have to be inside the aquarium)
