Hi! My name is Will (I'm 5 and 1/3) and my dad and I got a 16 gal planted fresh water tank from you about 6 months ago. (My dad is writing this).

We have in our tank: 7 neons/cardinals, 5 lemon tetras, one bleeding heart tetra, two cory sterbas, two shrimp, two oto cats and one frog. We have some wood and stone.

We had two dwarf gouarmis (?), but they both died over the past few months. (Dad comment: water condition is good, no pink for NO2/NO3, so not sure why. Anyway ....)

What South American fish should we get to replace the gouramis? I like the fact all the fish are from SA so is there a good one to add? We liked the gouramis because different from tetras and because they were at the top of the tank and our other fish are in the middle or on the bottom.

Also, I like bettas, they are cool. Could I add a betta (know not from South America)?

Thanks!

Will

Hi Will ! I am 47 and 2/3.

Your fish above are all from South America, your shrimp are probably Asian, your frog is from West Africa...but it doesn't matter that much.

We had two dwarf gouarmis (?), but they both died over the past few months. (Dad comment: water condition is good, no pink for NO2/NO3, so not sure why. Anyway ....)
Hmmm, I don't know why they died.

Maybe Hatchet fish, only thing with Hatchets (and frogs too for that matter) is you should drop your water level about 2 inches from the top so they can jump a little... also keep the tank lid covered of course. We have a few Hatchets in stock now, and expect more Wednesday next week. They go best in a group of 4 or more, like most tetras.

You can try the Betta, but if he misbehaves (fights with your other fish) take him out, leave him in a bowl, change his water once a week with the aquarium water.

Thanks for writing Will !

Ned:

Thank you for the email.

I like your choices of the fish.

I think I'll take a hatchet.

My dad and will go next Saturday.

I've seen the ocean hatchet in a case at the Boston aquarium.

See you soon.

Will

Dad here, my 5 year old does not have much patience yet. Do you have 4 or 5 hatchets in stock if we visited tomorrow Sunday? Thanks, Kingsley
