I have a 25 gallon freshwater planted aquarium that I've been stocking with plants and fish from you guys. Last weekend I was in asking about plants, Malaysian Trumpet Snails, and I bought some Cardinal Tetras.

Below is a stocking plan I have in mind. I have an added question in regards to it. Someone suggested to me that I add a centerpiece fish such as an Apistogramma cacatuoides. Would such a fish fit in with my tank? Do I need to worry about it attacking/eating any of the other inhabitants?

Animals (Planned)
3 Corydoras aeneus I have 2
15 Cardinal Tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi) I have 6
6 Malaysian Trumpet Snails (Melanoides tuberculata) I have these

Plants (Planned, * means I currently have)
Green Cabomba carolinians
Hairgrass (Eleocharis acicularis)
Parrot's Feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum)
*Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana)
*Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
*Marimo Moss (Aegagropila linnaei)

Filtration
Fluval 206 canister with Filter Block, Bio Foam, double BioMax, and ClearMax.

Substrate
-CaribSea Eco-Complete Black
-Seachem Flourite Black

Lighting
Finnex FugeRay Planted+ 24inch

My goal is to go for an Amazon inspired biotope.

Sorry, I meant to say that I'd only want to add 1 Apistogramma cacatuoides and I would reduce the number of Cardinal Tetras to 12 in that case.

sounds fine, I would have more fish

sure

Do I need to worry about it attacking/eating any of the other inhabitants?
No, apistogramma and rams and checkerboard dwarfs live well and peacefully with cardinals

Thank you! That is a huge help. Had read that Apistos are peaceful but also read that they're carnivores and have huge mouths.

Could the Apisto be kept singly (if so, would a male or female be better) or do I need to keep a pair (do I have the room for a pair)?

Out of curosity would an Angelfish be a suitable alternate to an Apistogramma cacatuoides or would it attack/eat any of the other inhabitants such as the Cardinal Tetras?

Do you have any Apistogramma cacatuoides or Angelfish in stock and about how much are they?

they do have big mouths
they should NOT be kept with tiny shrimp like crystal reds but they can be kept with Amano shrimp

Could the Apisto be kept singly
yes
(if so, would a male or female be better)
probably doesn't matter
or do I need to keep a pair (do I have the room for a pair)?
you have room for a pair of apistos, but you don't have room for multiple dwarf cichlids, in my experience

Out of curosity would an Angelfish be a suitable alternate to an Apistogramma cacatuoides or would it attack/eat any of the other inhabitants such as the Cardinal Tetras?
old large angelfish can and will eat a young small cardinal

Do you have any Apistogramma cacatuoides
yes $18 each
or Angelfish in stock and about how much are they?
yes $10 - $60 each

You mention that you would have more fish than my plan of:

3 Corydoras aeneus
15 Cardinal Tetras (I have 6)
1 Apistogramma cacatuoides

A few questions. Would you add more Cardinal Tetras or more Corydoras? If so, what is the maximum number of either you'd recommend in my tank?

Also, I intend to come by tomorrow (MLK day) to buy more Cardinal Tetras and some plants. How many fish would you say is safe to add to my tank at one time? I've read that adding more than a few could cause my tank to go through a new mini-cycle phase. Not sure if that is true but if so I'd like to avoid the mini-cycle.

well just keep testing the water
if nitrites are too high just change the water

we sell good kits
and / or we can test your water here

good idea to test your tap water also

a 25 gal tank
can house probably 60 cardinal tetra sized fish

Thank you for the info. You've been so helpful to me here on your message board. I'll definitely be coming by today to get a small batch of Cardinal Tetras and some of the aquatic plants you e-mailed me about.

Thank you!
