what would be some good tank mates for a german blue ram and can they be with larger South American cichlids ....

let's see :
cardinal tetras, most other small South American tetras, guppys, platys, corydoras cats, small plecos, rasboras, many other small fish

the only Large South American cichlid I would put with Rams
are Discus
(they like the same foods and temperature)

Angelfish and pearl or moonlight gouramis would make good midwater focus fish... I've had rams with some eartheater cichlids before - gymnogeophagus and satanoperca types - it worked fine until the geos paired off (then I had to move the rams). Problem with the larger cichlids is that it doesn't take them very long to kill off the rams if they decide they need the space to breed etc. So it may not be worth the risk.

tiger barbs probably too rough
cherry barbs or hexazona barbs would be mellow enough
