Over the past 3 years i have of bought 10+ Tang gobies one at a time and all have died within 8 months. These fish are one of my favorites but its really starting to become very fustrating  . My pH is 8.2 and everything else is a flat 0 with a good air pump for oxygen levels and good filter carbon changes. i do weekly water changes and ended up doing multiple water changes this past week to try and save this last goby but it was unsuccessful. They all of a sudden start to become unactive and breathe heavily and within a week there gone. Im not blaming your store at all i just want to be clear. The pH might be a little low but thats the only thing i can think of but it doesnt seem deadly. Im just confused. i want to buy another one before the end of spring with a optimistic outlook unless you recommend me not to. Does anyone have any advice on what to do or are they just a fragile animal ? a:( :( also any chance you can get another color scheme insted of the grey with blue bars ??

sorry for the long story

I have two tanganyikan goby cichlids in stock now
1 is in our 80 gallon long
the other is in the 125 gallon opposite side to the 80

both have been here for several months and seem to be fine

all the Tanganyikan mouthbrooders are relatively delicate
(Tropheus in particular, are prone to get bloat disease ...
cyprichromis and featherfins have soft skin and can get damaged by rough handling or mean fish)
so
I try to keep all mt Tanganyikans warm 79 - 81 degrees F
pH 8 - 9
alkalinity and hardness VERY HIGH
low nitrAte seems to help (frequent Large water changes)
and of course zero ammonia and zero nitrIte

Thanks You Ned for the response. I have all the water settings but I don't know about the alkalinity and hardness. I use seachem Malawi/Victorian buffer. Any other buffers or chemicals to adjust hardness and alkalinity. Maybe a food adjustment is needed too.

in theory
goby cichlids are invertebrate pickers
so
they are likely picking thru the algae
to get worms, insects and shrimps that live in the algae

but
when they eat these inverts
they are also eating the algae that the invert ate
so
I feed all our fish
particularly East African cichlids
plenty of green spirulina algae flake food

also goby cichlids are rather aggressive amongst each other
so they may be fighting
