Hi Ned,

Can you help with a question that has been nagging me. I was told by a friend that my GH and KH were not correct for my peacock/hap tank. What is the correct GH & KH for a Malawi set up. I currently have 15GH & 12KH with PH of 8.6

Thanks for Your help
Henry

1st of all
all cichlids are very 'plastic' they tend to get used to what you do and survive with whatever that is
given you are not way below or way above what they tolerate

basically
for Malawi
I would say the ideals are
pH 7.8 - 8.8 "high"
KH 120 parts per million - 350 parts per million "high"
GH 150 parts per million - 300 parts per million "high"
... also the temperature in the Lake Malawi is a consistent 78 degrees F
but I sometimes keep adults cooler so they fight less...

my kit uses the term "parts per million"
so
I do not know what your "15GH & 12KH" is equal to

Hi Ned,

I use an API GH/KH test kit and it seems the conversion is 1 GH is equal to 17.86 ppm which would mean my GH is 268ppm and my KH is 214ppm. I guess I would try to mimic Lake Malawi if I knew what that was. Do you know what it is? Also, what ppm do you keep your cichlids at? Do you think mine is ok?

Thanks Henry

.... so
right in the middle of my numbers
so that's fine

your fish will talk to you
if they behave like they are happy
then
they are happy with what they have
