Hello,
Any recommendations besides using smaller buckets to refill tank or the use of a faucet attachment. I don't feel comfortable lifting and pouring 5 gallon buckets back and my kitchen sink has a Kohler spray faucet and can't be adapted. Looking for a way to pump the water from the bucket up into the tank. Any suggestions for a pump (basement pump doesn't look like a good idea). Thanks in advance. - Derek

Hi Ned,
It's a 55 gallon. Taking water out and vacuuming isn't the issue it's returning the water back. Thanks for any input you have.

Home depot will have adapters needed to adapt a python water changer. I maintain about 100 tanks, and have adapters for pretty much every faucet. All adapters were bought or made from fittings at HD.

Yeah, there is no way to adapt this faucet. It's a pull out Kohler faucet with spray head all in one. Back to the drawing board.

Looking for a way to pump the water from the bucket up into the tank. Any suggestions for a pump (basement pump doesn't look like a good idea).
Get the following:
  • Rubbermaid Brute 32-gallon container
    A pump from Uncle Ned's
Tubing to fit the pump outlet (length tbd)
A U-shaped filter intake tube with strainer (to connect to a short piece of tubing to make a siphon tube)
To do your water change:
  • Siphon water from the tank into your 32-gallon container
Pump the water from the tank to your sink or other drain (or to a garden or lawn)
Carry smaller buckets of fresh water and dump them into your 32-gallon container
    Add any conditioners
Mix the water by letting the pump circulate it in the container
Connect your siphon tube to the pump outlet and let it fill your tank
The U-tube is typically longer on one end then the other. If you add just the right length of tubing to the short end, and put your strainer on that tubing, you can start the siphon and walk away. With "just the right length", the tank's water level drops below the siphon before your 32-gallon container overflows.

Similarly, if you fill your freshwater to the same height in the container, then you can start pumping it back into the tank without worrying about the tank over filling.

With a decent sized pump, it'll drain the 32-gallons in a matter of minutes. The strainer on the end of the siphon tube disperses the rapid flow back into the tank

Carrying the buckets of water is a drag, but at least you don't have to worry about carefully pouring it into your tank. You can dump it with abandon into the container. :-)

if you unscrew the faucet head, you now have 1/2 inch female thread on the hose. get a 1/2 inch nylon threaded nipple, and a 1/2 inch female adapter to hose fitting. all fittings at home depot. This is what i do................

Thanks for the info. Seems logical. I'll adapt it to my needs and house layout.

Hello - I had the same issue with my new 75 gallon. I quickly realized my water change process for the 20 gallon tank wasn't scalable.

I bought a Marineland water pump and some standard tubing. I fill up several 5 gallon buckets, treat for chlorine, and then pump the water into the tank from the floor level buckets. Much easier than lifting buckets five feet and trying to gently pour in fresh water. To make it hands free, I assembled a two inch diameter "J" out of PVC piping, fed the non-pump end of the tubing through it. For each water change, I hook the invert "J" over the edge of the tank. The Marineland Maxi--Jet 1100 has no trouble pumping water up a five foot vertical rise.
