Hi All,
we have a 55 gal malawi tank with 3 labs, 3 jakes,3 vc-10, 4 maingano and 4 jewels a spotted cat and a pleco all about 2".... we just moved the breeding jewels out of the tank to a 'breeder tank" and we have had 2 of the female jakes die and 1 ( I believe the lesser male) Maingano getting pounded. ( he will probably be dead in the am) I believe the Jewel was the alpha and now there is a battle for it but why are all the females dying. our tank is very stable 8.2 ph 78 degrees with the nitates running at 20 and nitrites at 0. Amonia at 0 too. All the fish "appear" normal. Any thoughts... we feed them all flake food.

well
1st thing
you need more fish

2nd try turning temp down to 72

also
look for dominant male that has no damage
he is probably the trouble maker

put him in his own tank for a while

Can I bring that sub- male maingano in and then get some others?. Any suggestions on species.... I like the frontosa... but I heard they are really mean... Color is our goal... How many fish should we shoot for?

sure

sometimes old males are mean, never a problem when young

16 minimum ,24 maximum
(they create their own distraction when crowded)
also when adding more cichlids
add at least 6 at a time
