Yesterday I went to feed the goldfish and noticed 2 floating- one stuck to the filter and the other at the top of the tank, both breathing. I'm not a huge "fish" person but i did some surfing last night and read about dropsy. Also read salt water would not hurt (?) so I took out both fish and put them in their own bowl with warm water and a tiny pinch of kosher salt. The larger of the two did not make it thru the night but the smaller one is now breathing on the bottom of the bowl instead of the top. Both had redness through out their fins, gills, eyes... and flukes?? I gather it has more to do with the original tank itself and needing to be balanced? Please advise, thank you!

I suggest you
drain 90% off the water in the main tank
refill with room temperature tap water
use a tap water conditioner such as Aqutan or Novaqua according to the directions
add 2 teaspoons of salt (regular sodium chloride) per 1 gallon of water
(so 40 teaspoons OR 13 tablespoons of Salt for a 20 gallon aquarium)
get the filter going again
put the fish back in the tank
wait 2 days
see how he does

important to know your gallonage so that you don't overdose
there are 7.45 gallons of water in a cubic foot

lots of info here

follow directions for "freshwater Ick" section

I doubt you have flukes
it is possible

if you do we sell a medicine for that
