I was wondering if anyone here kept 10gallon tanks with an incandescent strip and 2 long long life florescent coil bulbs. I added one to a small tank that used a small incandescent bulb and now the plants look much greener and better. If you do let me know what plants you have and what substrate you're using, I'm interested in setting up a low cost planted tank.

yes
that will work fine
the screw in PC bulbs are 10 watts each
so you will get 2 watts per gallon
that should grow anything

we are a little low on plants

we might be getting an order next week

list of species we can get is at:
http://www.floridaaquatic.com/aquarium_plants_1.html

so,
let me know if there is something special you want

Hello,

I have a 10g planted tank that is running the set-up you describe. I am running 2 10 watt 6500K CF bulbs in the incandescent fixture. For substrate, I am using Eco-complete.

Current plants include (generally) cabomba, ludwigia, pennywort, and a crypt. Plants have been growing like crazy.

I have two PC's on an ancient tank (I picked it all up on craigslist for $10) that I'm using to grow out five yellow lab fry... they're happy enough with it; I have some duckweed, java moss & hornwort in there for them. they've been in there about six weeks now, about halfway through their growout before they can go into the big tank, I think.

the strip light does get a little warm, but given that it originally held a 30w incandescent, I think it's fine. I also don't leave it on for extended periods anyhow.

note that there are different kinds/sizes of "standard" bulbs, so you may have to experiment.
