pond water temperatures
'til March 20th
are expected to be 40 degrees F

this is really too cold to start feeding Koi...
but if you have goldfish only in your pond
it may be okay to feed very lightly
with spring/autumn formula foods
or wheatgerm based foods

koi ideally should be fed
with spring/autumn formula foods
or wheatgerm based foods
from about 52 - 65 degrees F. pond water temperature
...then switch to
color enhancing or growth formula foods
when the water is consistantly above 65 degrees F.

also
filter bacteria really won't grow
until the water is well above 52...
so there won't be much to break down dissolved waste
'til things warm up

so just let everything sleep for a little while more

just be patient
weather will warm soon!

it is a good idea to do a large percentage water change
(and leaf / muck removal)
once in the spring (and again in the fall)

to avoid shocking the fish while you do this
you want to make sure the new water is aprox the same temp as the pond water

usually your outside hose water is cold only
(ground water can be colder than pond water)
...so we also sell faucet adaptors
that you can use to screw a garden hose (or python)
to your mixing valve (indoor faucet)

also when doing a water change
(in particular a large water change)
it is best to use dechlorinator
...we sell several brands
