I'm interested in getting a 4' x 2' x 2' (120 Gallon) freshwater tank setup, that I'm planning on planting as well as having fish. As this is going in my living room I'd like to get nice look stand an canopy that matches the rest of the wood (cherry), so I went looking on the (incredibly annoying) Oceanic website and found the following.

Tank 48.5" x 24.5" x 25" 120 gallon Cherry Oak Tank (20024)
Stand 49" x 25" x 32" Cherry Oak (60640)
Canopy 50" x 25" x 8" Cherry Oak (81850)

For a filtration system I've been looking at the Ehiem Pro II 2128.

I believe Ned is an Oceanic reseller and sells Ehiem, and I was wondering if I could get a price on what I've listed above.

I'll also obviously be in need of lighting, but I can't find any kind of information on why kind of lighting the Canopy allows for. Essentially I'm looking to have two sets of lights on separate timers that are about 120W each. (The goal here is to be have some versatility in the amount of light that is delivered). Any information/pricing I could get on lights of this nature that would fit the canopy would be appreciated.

I have a rather detailed question about the stand and canopy, specifically how wide are the openings in the back? I'm going to be placing this tank in the center of a room against a 2'3" square support pillar, and ideally I'd like the opening on the back to be 2'3" wide as well. I'm pretty sure, however, that it's not but I'd like to know what the actually width of the opening in the back is. I'd also like to know if it's possible to have the stand and canopy custom made such that the open is 2'3", and if so how much it would cost in terms of time and money. Do know if you how easy it is to find out these things, but I figured it can't hurt to ask.

Finally, none of what I've written above is set in stone yet, so any intelligent suggestions would be appreciated as well. I've been running a 40 gallon planted tanks for a few years now, so I know the basics, but this will clearly be the biggest tank I've ever owned.

well

Oceanic is a nightmare of supply problems
(very long story)

I have sent your request to my distributor
he should get back to me sometime tomorrow

we can get AGA 120g products without too much delay

those prices are on this same part of the boards
if you want I can break it down for you

if you are doing a wood canopy
I suggest
retro kits

just tell me how much light you want

typically plant tanks use 2 watts per gallon

so I might suggest 3) 96 watt PC's

we can also get T5 retro
4) 54 watts would equal 1.8 watts per gallon

or maybe 2) 70 watt MH would look nice

whatever you want

I would be fine with an AGA aquarium, except that I need a decent looking stand and canopy. I also like that the Oceanic stands are 32" rather than 28" like most AGA stands. I do think the AGA modern series look nice, and they are 32", but they apparently don't come in the cherry finish that I need. Bottom line is I need a well built tank with a stand and canopy that looks nice and has a cherry wood type finish. If I can get that from AGA easier than Oceanic I'd have no problem with it.

As far as lighting goes I am looking for around 2W/Gal (240W) as you suggest. I also want to be able to run at around half that, because I have generally have low light plants that can deal with that and it helps control the algae. I generally run at 1/2 lighting for 12hours a day and then go up to full power for two hours in the evening when I'm home or have guests over. At least that's what seems to work with my 40Gallon setup, and I'm hoping to upscale that to the new 120Gallon (stick with what you know).

So in principle what I want are x2 ~120W or x4 ~60W blubs. Unfortunately while I know about MH and standard fluorescent lights, T5, and PC lights are new to me and I'm less familiar with there benefits and drawbacks. Would it be possible to get two ~60W PC lights and two ~60W MH lights?

T5 is most efficient electric use and bulb replacement - wise
not very many bulb color options at this writing
...supposedly bulb replacement every 20 months

Power Compact very efficient also
many bulb color options
best bulb replacement every 13 months...
favorite is half 10oooK / half 67ooK for plant peeps

Metal Halide .. prettiest
sunbeam , as opposed to overcast...
many bulb color options
rapid color shift 'tho, so
best bulb replacement every 10 months

Thanks for the commentary on the lights, it is helpful. I checked out the current website and it seems like the sunpaq retrofit model 1606 listed here would be appropriate. Would these have any heat issues in a canopy?

I believe "Mission" and "Modern" are different with the Mission being made of resin with a wood like finish and Modern being actual wood. Are both available in Cherry? It's not clear from what you said above since Modern is used in one place and mission in the other.

What I mean by "open in the back" is if you open the door to the stand and look into it you can see the wall behind the stand, i.e., the side of the stand facing the wall is open. I'm not planning on putting my tank up against a wall, but rather a support pillar in the middle of the room, as shown in this diagram

[ img ]

So I want to know how wide the opening in the back of the stand is. Ideally I'd like to to be exactly 2'3" wide, that same width as the pillar. My guess is the opening in a standard 4' wide stand is much largers than that, but I don't know which is why I'm asking.

be alot easier if you come down the store
I can show you the actual stand and canopy

or if you give me your fax number I can draw it and write in the dimensions
(I'm not smart enough to cadcam over email or this board)

the entire back of the stand is wide open
(are you worried about getting tubes to the eheim maybe?)

fanning or venting the canopy may be necesary depending on the lighting you choose,
on ours at the store
I installed a small fan in the top middle of the canopy

the back of the canopy is wide open except for the little middle brace

one of my two distriutors
is showing all 4 items in stock ('tho some items only 1 of each)

modern cherry stand 48x24"
modern cherry canopy 48x24"

mission cherry stand 48x24"
mission cherry canopy 48x24"

the mission maple top I have at the store is partially fake wood, but a good fake

I'm trying to get details over the phone from the distributor...

hopefully he has good news on the Oceanic version but I'll be surprised if we can get anything

basically what happened to Oceanic is they moved from Texas to Wisconsin
and we can't get anything hardly since the move

they always did make high quality products
but always had horrid customer service
(now we have almost NO products and completely NO service)

Thanks for looking into all this for me.

So it seems my two options if I want a 4'x2'x2' Tank with a Cherry finish stand and canopy are

AGA Mission Cherry Stand $700
AGA Mission Cherry Canopy $400
AGA Tank $500

or

Oceanic Cherry Oak Stand $710
Oceanic Cherry Oak Canopy $410
Oceanic Tank $670

I've seen the mission series stand, and while it is nice for fake wood I'm inclined to go with the real wood of the Oceanic, which is equivalently priced. There is a significant price difference between the tanks though.

I see that your store is open till 9pm this evening. I'm considering tanking a trip out to your store so we can discuss this all there. Are you still going to be there around 8pm? (I'd don't want to try and get there earlier because I want to avoid the rush hour traffic).

FYI, My ideal delivery date for the tank/stand/canopy is Friday, May 18th. I'm moving into my new place on the 17th, so it's can't come earlier than the 18th. It would need to be delivered to Cambridge, MA and it needs to go up two flights of stairs.
