BGA has a nasty habit of fixing N2... i.e. it's most competetive when nitrate is the limiting nutrient. Adding nitrate (for example KNO3 in a live plant tank) shifts the limiting nutrient to phosphorus (usually) and often solves the problem. Of course, there are alot of theories out there. Good info...

Is it worth it? Do the majority of livebearer-buyers care where their fish come from? I would bet those that do care, would also care about the genetic integrity of the stock. It's easy to raise livebearers, but not as easy to raise quality (not inbred) fish ... while dealing with all the other fish...

Could the author or Ned post any more information about the "plague"? How does it present? I'm not an african cichlid keeper myself, but I was recently talking to friend (the type of "friend" who probably frequents the big chain shops) who is/was battling what sounded like a bact...
