Are you referring to the overflow box?

Maybe they are looking for an area with more water movement and thus, oxygen?

Do you lose alot of food to the sump? Maybe they have learned that the food comes to them if they hang out by the overflow.

Other than that... no clue. Can you elaborate?

Abby

Okay, Ned's idea set off a bell in my head... i have seen a very similar structure in the zebrafish facility where I used to work. I would look under a microscope or at least a magnifying glass and see if it looks like there are "polyps" that the animal retracts and then later expands agai...

Perhaps you could put the hermit crab on the sand with the shell tipped up in a position that would allow him to lift himself out. Put other shells around that shell so he can lift out and hop in another without moving the heavy shell.

Worth a shot,
Abby

I've never seen anything like that.... Is it photosynthetic? Does it favor certain areas in the tank that are brighter or dimmer, more or less water current. If you continues to let it grow, does is stay in one plane, or branch out into the tank froming a mound? What is the texture? Other tank condi...

I agree that there may be no help from the 50% water changes unless the make-up water very well prepared with proper time given for aging and proper temperature. Also, when folks mention that they are doing daily water changes on a QT I generally infer that the tank is not adequately cycled. I see n...

Hi mjs, In response to some of your questions: 1. I use a Milwaukee regulator/solenoid/bubble counter set. I really like this unit, as it has been very reliable. However!! I ruined a solenoid because I wasn't using a check valve and had a little back siphoning incident when a tank ran out. I had pla...

I feel for you, man. In my opinion there are no good freshwater fish stores in the area. I've been living in the Nashua/Lowell area for a a couple years and recently moved farther north to Exeter, NH. I second that Textile in Lowell is decent, but he has really weird hours. I have bought a few well ...

I get mine from a beer and wine-making supplier, so that's another type of place to look. I bought my tank there and just exchange it when it empties... maybe 2x/year.

Well, I only have anecdotal evidence about which fish are more sensitive to high CO2…. A while back I was running a very high light plant tank and was flirting with the high end of both CO2 and ferts. I had a rio powerhead seize up that was my only source of surface agitation and I lost 5 fish. I lo...

Well, I guess I’ve been missing an interesting discussion. I think most of it has been said, but I thought I’d chime in. Ned is right about his little experiment being the first step. You should know what your water is going to do on its own before you decide how to further mediate the pH. He’s also...

Richard, Where are you located? I have loads (and I mean loads every week to the trash can) of your standard green cheatomorpha (spagetti macro, free of pests, pods included). However, I'm in Lowell, MA, so it would probably have to go in the mail. I, too, am a long time hobbist and I'm always inter...

I, too, would be inclined to suspect heat. Urchins and inverts in general are more likely to get stressed/killed when the temp spikes. If you run hot lights and/or have no AC you will see the temp climb during the summer months. Urchins and other inverts are also more sensitive than fish to toxins a...

Well, the tang looks like it’s had a rough life. I think the previous owner is correct that the condition is a result of chronic stress… probably from inadequate nutrition. However, I don’t think the fish is necessarily doomed from this point on. Proper and constant water parameters (low nitrates, c...

I just read your post again. Because you are new to salt water, my advice is to start reading and learning ASAP. There is alot to take in, depending on the complexity of this guy's system. When you buy a used/established system, you are jumping in with two feet and there is little time to learn as y...
